Fire at Oshala Farm

“We’re hard workers,” Elise Higley told Terry Youk and me when we first interviewed Elise and her husband Jeff, founders and owners of Oshala Farm, for a video for the Sustainable Herbs Initiative (Sustainable Herbs Project). Elise and Jeff are some of the hardest workers I’ve known and since that time have gone on to create one of the leading regenerative herb farms in the US. If you buy U.S. grown organic or products made with U.S. grown organic herbs, there is a good chance they were grown at Oshala.

As many of you may have heard, they just experienced a devastating fire on their farm. All their people and pets made it to safety, everything else did not. Within moments their entire dryer barn was engulfed in flames. The fire spread to their storage barn, their secondary dryer and their employee area, mechanic shop, and coolers. We’ve hosted two SHI Learning Journeys based at Oshala Farm. Both Elise and Jeff joined our recent Learning Journey in France and they’ve been actively engaged in our work from the beginning.

You can read an update from the fire here and see how you can help them rebuild.
