Biodiversity and Wild Herbs Pledge

To companies producing and selling herbal products:

We, the undersigned, are concerned about the environmental and social impacts of unsustainable wild harvesting as herbalism grows. As Sebastian Pole noted, harming the earth in this process would be contradictory to the very principles of using plants for well-being.

Unsustainable practices threaten biodiversity and the livelihoods of harvesting communities, as Gocha Dzneladze highlighted the crucial link between fair prices for collectors and ecological care. A significant portion of medicinal plants are wild-harvested, often from biodiverse regions by vulnerable populations. Over-harvesting and the loss of traditional knowledge due to rural migration further exacerbate these risks.

Ethical wild harvesting can protect ecosystems and support communities, but only with responsible practices. We urge your company to:

  • Prioritize knowing your source: Determine if ingredients are wild-harvested and ensure traceability.
  • Implement and verify sustainability: Adopt and verify adherence to standards like GACP, USDA Organic Wild-crop Harvesting Practice, UEBT Ethical BioTrade, or FairWild.
  • Buy certified ingredients: Seek out certifications from organizations like Rainforest Alliance/UEBT and FairWild.
  • Engage fairly with harvesters: Build transparent relationships and ensure fair pricing.
  • Support traditional knowledge: Recognize and value the ecological wisdom of harvesting communities.
  • Be transparent with consumers: Clearly communicate your sourcing practices.

By committing to these actions, your company can contribute to a sustainable future for herbalism, benefiting both the environment and the people involved. We, the undersigned, will support businesses that prioritize ethical and sustainable sourcing.

Join us in ensuring that the growth of herbal medicine supports a healthy planet and thriving communities.
